I’M WORKING ON A MARK 55 AND DEALING WITH THE RUSTED AND PITTED DRIVESHAFT THAT APPEARS COMMON ON THESE OLD ENGINES. SPECIFICALLY, THE AREAS WHERE THE SEALS ARE LOCATED ON THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF THE WATER PUMP. I WAS ABLE TO REPAIR THE LOWER SEAL AREA WITH A SPEEDIE SLEEVE, BUT THAT OPTION IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR THE UPPER SEAL AS THE IMPELLER WOULD NOT GO BY THE SLEEVE IF I WERE TO USE ONE.I HAVE A SIGNIFICANT GROOVE WHERE THE UPPER SEAL RIDES, AND THERE IS NO WAY I WILL GET ANY DECENT SEAL ON THIS PORTION OF THE SHAFT. AS IT IS, IT’S GOING TO LEAK AND THAT’S ALL THERE IS TO IT. MY QUESTION IS, HOW ARE THESE UPPER SEAL AREAS BEING REPAIRED SATISFACTORILY? I THINK I’M HEADED FOR THE MACHINE SHOP REGARDLESS, BUT I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY COMMENTS ON THE BEST APPROACH TO THE FINAL REPAIR. FROM WHAT I HAVE SEEN, PROBABLY THE BEST APPROACH IS SPRAY WELDING AND MACHINING BACK DOWN. ANY THOUGHTS?
