The one side of the clutch dog ears have some wear. I see no noticeable
difference in length from center to each end, nor different shoulders, etc.,
that would make me think I can’t flip over the dog.
The only difference I can see is the ears on one end are “clocked” in
a slightly different position than the other side. I can’t for the life of me
      see how that’s a problem.
Anyone know why I should not flip the dog over on this model?

I’m not used to working on these new fangled outboards that shift! 🙂

Also, curious if anyone knows what the “A” designates on the model number?
Marine Engine only shows them at MQ12.

      Thanks!

The manuals say not to flip it, but people do it all the time. Yes, even me.

Have no idea on the clocking. In fact, probably never noticed before

Model number suffix identifies any mid-year changes IF there were any, Otherwise it means nothing.

Thanks Frank. Guessing that OMC wanted to sell more parts. hence the “no flipping” note in the manual!

I was about eight years old and I heard my dad telling my mother he was having problems with the largest marine dealer in Port Arthur Ontario they were making unnessisary repairs.I got to go to town with him the next day. Port Arthur was 65 miles distant we would be picking up supplies for the resort and a CD12 johnson that was in for repairs it was jumping out of gear caused by poor shifting practises .We stopped at the dealer late in the afternoon and my dad and the owner chatted my dad paid the bill .New clutch cone etc.
I can still see it clearly as my dad set the motor on the wooden floor of his 52 Ford pickup and drained the oil and took the lower unit apart. What he found did not make him happy you guessed it they had reversed the clutch cone,My dad called the owner outside to examine there was alot of sputtering and bs on how they had just fired the mechanic the previous day.My dad remained tottaly calm and told the owner he didnt care what excuse he used but he wanted the bill for the motor ripped up and that in future he would be using another shop.I thought the owner was going to cry as he gave my dad a bunch of apologies and saying things like look how far back we go etc.
We still used that shop till they closed about 6 years ago but they never tried to screw my dad or I again.

Well, at least I won’t be charging my brother in law for a new clutch dog that I “filpped over”!
