Hey all. Just found out my 59 Elgin is a 62! I’m looking for a bearing assembly cap. I have attached photos. Any ideas? Thanks! – John

What’s wrong with the one you have?

See the ring around the center? That is where the cover cracked in a perfect circle when the previous owner hit something very hard. It leaks oil badly!

I guess I’m not understanding. Doesn’t the prop shaft seal fit in the large bore? But maybe not. I’m wondering if the part can be salvaged by boring it out and fitting a spacer bushing around the seal if it goes in that small bore.. Guess I’m not seeing the big picture.

I don’t know? Maybe that would work. I have a repair man with 50 years experience. I’ll ask him. In the event that its not an option, do you think I could have it welded?

It could probably be welded and re-machined. I see where it’s broken. Unless you can do it yourself or have a close friend that can do it, that repair will likely be more costly than a decent parts motor. I have one of these motors but I have not had it apart yet to repair it. I’m trying to figure out what punched the circle out. Is there a shoulder on the prop shaft that punched it? These motors show up for sale from time to time. If you don’t already have an extra one for parts you probably should have anyway if you are trying to get it back to good running condition. Maybe finding a motor for a parts donor is the best bet. Just my 2 cents.

Ben, I comepletly agree. I would love a parts motor. Want to part with yours?! Haha. I’m not sure how it happened. My cousin is a welder so I could probably have it done if need be, but I want to look around first. The motor runs amazingly. This is my only problem at present.

                    59ElginGuy,
Glad to hear yours is a good runner. If you haven’t gotten this fixed by the time I get into fixing mine up, I’ll let you know own if I end up with an extra one of these. I have heard it recommended to have at least two parts motors if you are fixing one of these up. I’m still kind of looking for another parts motor myself. If I happen across one and end up with extras I won’t need I’ll let you know. What kind of condition is your hood in? Mine is pretty cracked. Be careful with the hood on these. They are pretty delicate.

It not likely that can be welded.
The aluminum is contaminated with oil.
If that is a steel insert cast in the
aluminum its not salvageable as well.
There got to be another out there.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

That’s a very good point Tubs. Welding may be an impossibility. I know there are others out there. I’ll be at Suter’s tomorrow and I’ll be on the lookout.
