I just replaced the upper seal in 1957 Johnson FD.I just got the motor and could see it had been leaking. After installing the new seal I decided to squirt a little oil on it.Gave it a few turns and air bubbles appeared.Whats going on?

Perhaps there is damage or wear on the crank mating surface?

Mike it to check groovey wear pattern, might need a Speedi-collar….bearing slop?

A Speedi -collar or by some other name is a very thin stainless steel sleeve that press fits over the shaft and provides a new clean surface for the seal lip to ride on. Available at your friendly neighborhood bearing store.

Install a new seal just short of the wear groove if you can on that motor.
