I bought this motor a couple of years ago, never heard it run. I did the usual tuneup. New top crank seal + new ignition ,carb rebuild and overhauled Lower unit and impeller. Started it up and it makes a noise like a bad record player (scratching) sound. Checked coil posts and changed stator plate. I thought was a little loose on powerhead. Started again and same noise. Noise is coming from crankcase area. Bad crank bearings ? Your thoughts. johng

Sometimes you will run across a motor with a bad center crankshaft bearing . The crankshaft bearing surface will be pitted…. I describe this sound the same as a kid on a skate board rolling down the sidewalk. When a motor gets put away without fogging it, in the right kind of environment, this can happen.
