1970 Toyoda Land Cruiser, Anyone know if the original straight 6 cylinder motor had hardened exhaust seats for unleaded fuel or were leaded fuel type?

The japanese WW-2  Zero fighter airplane was air cooled aluminum block & hardened seats for the exhaust valves. The Cruiser enging was designed after the Chevy 6 cylinder, but built light years better including redesigned cylinder head. I’ve never seen a head bolt untorquing sequence in any USA cars. The Cruiser shows that! Found a 1970 original ebgine manual. Very intersting to learn from.

P.S. I just aquiredd a 1970 Toyota cruiser, sat for 25 years. Correct spelling was ToyoDa, changed  to ToyoTa to be more western sounding & yes Toyota made outboards.

The 1970 engine did not have hardened valve seats – I think they first came factory standard in 1975 when unleaded fuel was first mandated.

          Bob,

Thanks so much. Another guy said in 73 in Japan. Time to pull the head. After 25 years it’s time anyway.

:>) !! This site has been so good to me, I hope I can give back with my elecctrical  & limited outboard knowledge.

Not all premium gasoline needed lead (TEL) to increase anti knock rating. Some refiners offered high octane unleaded gas AND Kiedhaefer recommended
it when available back ing the days of Green Tank Mercs. Kiekhaefer also offered a premium 2 cycle oil well before TCW-3.
There was a lot said about need for lead to avoild damage
              to valve seats when nonlead
was mandated. Not a word about
problems with the unleaded premium that had long been on
the market by a major refinery. Then again, cars in the 1950s were made to last
until the 36th payment was mailed.

              Green Thumbs,

The book shows 7.5 to 1 compression, no need for hi test, Timed like a 55 Chevy with flywheel ball showing TDC. Then it stated advance until pinging @ full throttle & retard just a little till it stops. I was suprised that was the way to set the timing after everything ws so presision. Chevy 6 had a incrumential graph under the distributer & was to be set @ 4 degrees advance. All static settings & no timing light, Both very crude timing proceedure in my eyes.

I used at the time a very small lamp connected to the points, When the points opened the lamp would go out & better be on the timing marks aligned to be correct

I have no idea how to tune a Toyoda outboard, never seen one yet.
