After all the fretting on this deal I’m feeling a bit relieved after seeing blue spark out of each coil. Owner said plugs were dry after cranking so no fuel I imagine. Will start by squirt can prime then stripping carb & pump. I suppose I should look at impeller even if it pumps and pull the flywheel to look at wires & insulator blocks. I also think eliminating the kill switch makes sense. If nothing else I’ve become an OB collector w Clinton, Sea King & Merc. HMMM? 3 motors, my son’s boat-maybe I need a boat too? Can’t wait for manuals from library to arrive. Thanks for everyone’s help & patience! GJ

All is well-squirt in carb, 3 pulls & fired up.

Excellent . Joe Poole of Ferguson Poole in Atlanta is the go to guy for Mercury parts IMO should you need something.

I sold my canoe Old Town 174 (only used once in 10 yrs) and my sailboat O’Day Javelin last year(I wasn’t able to step mast myself safely-balance issues) which I dearly miss. So I’ll be hunting for a little trailer putter that an old fart can deal with. Lots of big old runabout being given away lately but no little rowboats. Lots of dead jet skis too-maybe I could graft a motor on one of those. Nah, I need to take grandkids for rides maybe even fish.

Nice, much better than the giant glass tri hull bass boat behemoths

Update-just glancing at stuff I spied a crack in the fuel pump by pulse nipple that someone else mentioned having. Ordered Mikuni knockoff from Peoples Paradise.

As an update I found the plastic fuel pump cover had 3 cracks where fitting screws in making the epoxy plan less sure. By deeper surfing I found a cast aluminum cover on ebay and ordered that plus a rebuild kit from Oldmercparts. I’ve found nothing plugging carb so the lack of pump pulsing may have been the only problem. We’ll see. Also my apologies to the member I hit w several PMs as I’m sure he gets more than his share of questions. GJ

Update #2 upon digging deeper into carb I found the cone shaped tower that holds the filter cover on was fractured where the fuel feed holes are. It is bonded together with something as it seems solid but I gave it an over coat of JB Weld as reinforcement. Perhaps the filter cover gasket was leaking and a PO torqued the little bolt too much. Can’t wait for the pump cover and gasket set to arrive and try starting motor. I’ll see about making some new gaskets for it. Anyone got a favorite sealer they use on filter covers like that? Thanks,GJ
