Yes, the snap caps are kind of a pain.  The TPU ones that I am printing work OK.  A Cotter pin would have been a better design from the start IMO.  So, you drilled a hole in the prop shaft for the Cotter pin from the new cap to fit through?

No I did not drill a hole, it was there!  Maybe there are some years and models that don’t have a cotter key under the rubber cap?  I thought it was there to hold the propeller on if the nut popped off.  This motor is a ’57 Johnson.  I guess I learned something today!

Once I thought I was wrong but I was mistaken!

Isn’t there a hole in the prop shaft for a  cotter pin already.  The cotter pin is kind of a “safety” that keeps the prop from falling off if the rubber cap comes off.  The shear pin is kept in place by the rubber cap.  So, am guessing he drilled the hole in his replacement cap to match the exisiting hole in the prop shaft.

on engines  with  slip clutches under the impeller housing the pin is a “drive” pin  but  making some up with 3/16 brass rod  is a good added safety measure against break if you don’t use the cotter pin to hold the  nose cap..

Cotter pins  are risky imho  if it gets knocked out by impact  & end  you up loosing the prop    !!
