      Gentlemen,

First post, I recently acquired this Goodyear Seabee 5 hp motor (model # 025-3564A) in non-running condition. I found it in what was basically a junk heap in the back of an antique shop & couldn’t resist it.
The engine turns and has compression but no spark. I need to pull the flywheel,But am uncertain how to do this without damagingthe flywheel. Can I thread bolts into the holes that attach the the starter mechanism and use a harmonic balance or steering wheel puller?
This is my first antique outboard motor, it needs a lot more to get it running but I thought getting it to fire would be a great place to start.

      Thanks!
      Ray

From where you have it now, a harmonic balancer puller will do it. NOT a 3 jaw puller! Those 5hp flywheels usually pop off pretty easy.

Cool motors, your going to have a blast with it. Your motor is a 1949 to 1950 Gale built 5hp motor. Gale was the 3rd division company that was housed under OMC. Johnson and Evinrudes were housed under OMC as well. Gale built motors that were sold by different companies that slapped their badge name on them for resale. Examples Sea King from Montgomery Wards, Viking from Eaton"s in Canada, Atlas from Atlas tire company, Sea Bee from Good Year tire, Buccaneer from Gale own stock and their are others. Differences were side cowls, decals, and knobs. Power heads, internals, and lower units were the same. So, good news, plenty of parts motors…. 😀

Here is a free downloadable Master service manual for Gale motors. The link with take you Richard L. Plaquette’s site.

Your motors Gale reference model is 2G7 which is equal the Viking Gale model of C2G7. Here is downloadable parts manual.

Here is a you tube video that help give some guidance for removing a flywheel with a harmonic wheel puller.

Sorry, I can’t remember if your motor uses the OMC universal ignition.

Well, I think I have given you enough information to get started. Remember, when you put your flywheel back on you will need to torque the flywheel down with 40ft pounds of torque.

Keep us posted and post pictures for inspection. Remember it is helpful to take digital pictures as you go to help with will putting things back together. Keep parts in plastic zip lock bags and label them for ignition or carb. You get my meaning to help keep you organized and prevent accidental lose of parts. Hey, we all have been there.

          Cheers to ya,

          Cajuncook1

Being a 1949-50, it is before the OMC Universal Magneto. It has the almost bullet-proof OMC Magneto with a center rotating magnet

Chris_p, Cajuncook & FrankR thanks for all the info and advice. I’m looking forward to hearing this motor run again but like so many things it’s the journey as much as the destination. I think this is going to be a fun project, I’ll post as I go along…
              Thanks again,
              Ray

We’re looking forward to following your progress. The Gales are great motors. I own several of them. None of mine are as old as yours. All mine have the OMC universal magneto.

Thanks for all the help guys!
I used a harmonic balancer puller and the flywheel popped right off! Incidentally this is probably common knowledge but Autozone & O’Reilly’s have the pullers available in their tool loaner programs.

Both sets of points were so full of oxidation or whatnot that both of them read infinite ohms across their contacts when they were closed! I cleaned them and I now have spark. I’ve never seen points like these, I’m assuming they’re no longer available. I saw a set that were on eBay about a month ago, the buy it now price was $77.00. For a set of points…

I watched Cajuncook1’s video on how to time the later model Gale engines but my flywheel and igntion is totally different. Before I put the flywheel back on do I need to check timing in some way? Cajuncook1 thanks for all those videos, they’re great!

Ray, could you take a picture of your ignition plate on the motor from directly above and post it on the forum. Please include the whole ignition plate. Would like visualize something. Those coils look to be in great shape. The ignition videos on my channel are unfortunately for the later OMC universal magneto.

                    Thanks,

                        Cajuncook1,
                        Will this work?

                        Betty Ann,
I set my points to .020", does that sound right?
