      Help
Trying to start restoring some out boards and this is new to me. Have some Lausons and there is no Lauson person listed in info to ask questions.
Need to know colors for different years and models, what color for lower units and also info on how to do all this. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

      thanks Doug

To get the best feedback to questions a model number
and or serial number is essential. That is the best
information so we know what motor you have. Pictures
are also helpful. On the page where you post your message
at the bottom you will see "Attachments". There is a
preview option so you can learn how to use this feature.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

Well I don’t know much about Lauson outboards, but welcome to the club! These things are addicting!

I did an early 6hp restoration. Cowling was Rustoleum Sand color and lower unit was a dull aluminum. American Outboards used to have decals for them but I bought them years ago so don’t know if they are still available. The later 6hp shift motor is a blue cowling with dull aluminum lower unit. They are basically a lawnmower engine with an oil pump. Not hard to work on if it’s a non-shift motor. Can’t help with the shift type lower unit though. I’m sure someone will be able to help with the shift type. Every now and then you can find someone at an AOMCI meet who has experience with these outboards. I sold my Lauson years ago so I don’t have anything to refer to other than aging memories.

They are all the same just a different shape. Find a parts supplier too.

Oddjob motors has a site that talks about the Lauson motors. Not much info but some. The crankcase on the 600’s take about 20-22 ounces of 30 weght non detergent oil. Be careful taking the carb apart on the 600 as the main jet runs diagonally through carb and can get bent. Best to remove this before removing the float bowl. Gaskets you may have to make yourself. Seals can be bought at a local bearing supply house. There was a site on the net that said you can interchange the gears and prop shaft with the Martin 60 outboard. Same with the recoil spring. I haven’t tried any of this. I have been looking for a source to find some head gaskets. I believe a member had some advertised recently. Simple motors, I hope you have a lot of fun with them.
