I’m in the early stages of contemplating a possible coil substitution for my Champion HydroDrive Bendix- Scintilla mag. I have a couple of the “military” double secondary coils, These are the same physical size of the Scintilla so they should fit, By grounding one of the secondary taps, the coil should work electrically as a single secondary coil. There will be an issue with routing the spark plug wire, but we can work on that in time. The best (rotational) position for the new coil will require removing the laminations and rotating them 90* , this to get the tabs up away from mag plate ground.

Has anyone had luck pushing the lams out of one of these coils? I seem to recall a posting here that addressed that issue? Most likely by either Tubs or Bucc.

      Your thoughts, suggestions welcome

MILLING NOTCHES AND ENDS MIGHT WORK TO ROTATE 180

THE COILS SEEM TO BE FIRMLY ATTACHED TO CORE ON THE JUNK

        COILS I HAVE PRESSED APART.

EXPERIMENT ON JUNK COILS BEFORE ATTEMPTING ON GOOD

        JUST MY OPINION

Joe, There’s no way to remove the laminations from those military
Scintilla coils that I know of, without destroying them.
I’ve used those coils two or three times for coil swaps, and machining
the original laminations from the original coil to fit the Military coil.
The last time was a “bugger” getting the lams out.
I cut one end of the lams off near the coil, drilled a hole down the
center, most of the way through, using the milling machine,
and ran a punch through and hammered
away. It did not go well, but in the end, I had good spark.

Bucc, I thought that it might have been you that posted that experience. Can you remind me where to find that thread?

Use corona dope & very thin fiberglass cloth to relocate hi voltage terminal to clock correctly the output terminal sandwich & insulate new wire  terminal location. The fiberglass cloth & corona dope are insulators. Use flat braded wire for clearance. Corona dope can be found at MG Chemicals on line. It is an insulating coating & holds the wire in place. It insulates up to 35.000 volts & loooks like fingernail  polish. Bond a strip of glass cloth to wire path, lay in braided & add wire braid & recoat with glass cloth & corona dope. Let dry between coats. Corona dope was developed for high voltage insulating coatings with flyback transformers, cathode ray scanning beam outputs. Look it up & read please. Comes in a small glass container & has applicator brush. I have used this on a few green tank Mercurys. Be sure to ground the second hi-volt output terminal converting to a single fire coil. It works very well!!

Corona dope is listed as 4226 clear insulating varnish at MG chemicals & that page shows Super Corona Dope. Also look in MG chemicals for braided wire under desoldering wicks for braided wire.
