I ran into some 14-24 machine screws on the Johnson A-45 yesterday.
The last two to clean up that hold the back of the gas tank on.
One was brass, the other steel. Couldn’t find two that matched,
so I guess they’ll be painted.
There’s some on Ebay, but they’re the stove bolt type head.

J-25, It did not have the tube that goes on the muffler so I bought one that came with the screws from Arts Old Outboard Site. The screws that came with it are too small for the holes in the muffler. If I find larger screws I would have to drill the holes in the tube for them to fit through. Not much room for a larger hole in the tube.

Here are some pictures of the screws and muffler. The 1st picture is the tube that goes into the muffler showing how much room is left if I drill it out for larger screws. The second shows how much bigger the hole in the muffler is compared to the screw and the 3rd picture shows the screw on the left that came with the tube, middle to small also (showed for comparison) and the one on the right will screw in 1/2 turn. Probably wrong thread pattern on that one.

Took it out and it is too small.
I have a box of 50’s 60’s sea horse screws and none of them fit.

Screw holes don’t seemed to be striped and they are at least 3/8″ holes. It is a1929 model J-25. I took the bolt out from under the engine and it was too small also. I have the plate that goes over the hole in the muffler but I think that is for the earlier models. It also comes with the 1//20 screws.

One can never know for sure what some prior owner had done to “fix” a problem. It’s looking like the original screw holes , perhaps 1/4 – 20 were stripped and someone drilled and re-tapped to a larger size .. 3/8 maybe ???

I have no experience doing this, but I would call my expert welding buddy and ask,”Is it possible to ream the holes enough to get them clean and then fill with weld?”You could then redrill and tap.
