After restoring some 30+ early motors (1912 to 1941) I have never experienced this problem: I purchased a fully assembled original motor where everything turned over smoothly as it should. I decided to NOT disassemble the powerhead. I disconnected the driveshaft/lower unit tube for cleaning and polishing. When I attempted to reassemble the lower unit shaft tube and coupler to the powerhead, nothing lined up. The powerhead’s crankshaft coupler isn’t in the center of the opening that receives the driveshaft itself which also misaligns the driveshaft tube cast aluminum coupler. There doesn’t seem to be any slop in the powerhead shaft for the flywheel. I have turned the flywheel shaft watching the powerheads shaft coupler without any evidence of it wobbling. When the powerhead and lower unit are separated, they are free to turn as before I disassembled them.
Please tell me if you have experienced anything like this and a possible things to try to finish with its restoration!
Totally baffled, Bill in MN
April 4, 2022 at 8:06 pm #257483Are you sure the driveshaft tube isn’t bent?
Prepare to be boarded!

The driveshaft tends to flop around in the drive shaft tube
making it a challenge to get it back into the hole of the
crankshaft however if you still have the water pump
installed the spring in the piston will force the driveshaft
to the side of the driveshaft tube. You should be able to
to move the crankshaft so the flange will bolt up to the block
It might be easier for you to remove the water pump as well
as the lower unit gears and install one part at a time.

April 6, 2022 at 3:07 pm #257560The tub and shaft are not bend. I disasembled the whole lower unit and took out the pump and prop shaft gear. I now was able to assemble the aluminum tube and install the tube into the lower shaft of the powerhead. I still couldn’t turn the motor by hand, but tried using a drill and it did turn over, but was very tight. Everything is well lubercate. Haven’t replaced the pump or prop shaft gear yet.
Can the lower crank be off center?
Anyother ideas!

With only the driveshaft
tube installed and the bolts only finger tight see if
the flywheel turns freely. If so tighten each bolt a
little at a time checking after each one to see if the
flywheel still turns freely and there is no binding.
Don’t go in a circle. Do the bolts opposite each
other till they are all tight or binding occurs.
