Well, BRP doesn’t include prop shaft seals for the bearing carrier in reseal kits. That makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it?
Anyway, the OD is fairly simple (1.62" – 1.625"), but the prop shaft size is 1.125". So do I want that size for the ID, or maybe 1.0625"?January 10, 2016 at 5:21 pm #29943What unit are you working?
January 10, 2016 at 5:42 pm #29944Not sure I understand either question? The OD is 1 5/8" and the ID is 1 1/8". Sounds like a V-4 or early V-6 engine you might be working on. OMC/BRP includes all of the seals in their seal kits. Both for early and late (bigger propshafts) gearcases. Unless you just happened to get a package that was omitted the proper parts. Look up the part numbers and let me know what you need. I have a bunch of that stuff left over from all of the seal kits I have bought over the years. Be happy to send you some!

January 10, 2016 at 5:53 pm #29945#330137 in this chart has the given dimensions but is it the correct seal? It’s best to check the P/N at M.E. to make sure you get the proper one.
January 10, 2016 at 7:13 pm #29948OK, here we go – the motor is an ’86’ Johnson 40hp with a bastard lower unit on it. I’ve spent at least a couple hours on ME trying to figure out what I’ve got, first to hopefully get the right 15" driveshaft and now for the seals. The bearing carrier has 4 bolts holding it in, the closest thing I’ve found so far is a ’78’ – 70hp. Believe it or not, just about everything else only has 3 bolts. I ordered an ’86’ – 40hp seal kit and it only had 3 bolts and the only 2 seals were only like 1 & 3/16". 2 possible Sierra numbers I came up with are 18-2060 and 2001 and it looks like the 18-2001 would work. But now I don’t want to wait for shipping and figure NAPA has about any seal I need. Of course when I went in there yesterday, they acted like a 1/4" thick seal was some kind of freak and would take forever to look up!! "A couple hours to look up" was their reply.
So anywhere I go to check on seals, given a shaft size of 1.125", any seal for it will be slightly smaller, so it seals, right? I don’t have to specify something like 1.0625, right? Guess I better figure the driveshaft seals too.
At this point, I don’t see why I need a $50 plus shipping, seal kit for 4 seals and a large Oring.January 10, 2016 at 9:57 pm #29959Beerman….I picked up a box full of NOS seals ….just let me know what number you need and i’ll search for it. All are brand new and most in original boxes..my prices are 50% of ME.COM …………J.M.
studenut8@gmail.comJanuary 10, 2016 at 11:03 pm #29963All right, thanks everyone. I think I found out it’s a 45hp L/U. At least it’s 4 bolt and all the seal sizes match up. That Sierra to OMC chart is right on the money. If Jerry has them, I’ll be good to go!
January 11, 2016 at 12:33 am #29968Sounds like you are on the right track. A 45hp is a commercial unit in the states. It comes with essentially a 70hp gearcase except driveshaft. The propshaft will be V-4 size. If you look real close (magnifying glass) the part number is on the lip of the seals. I would be happy to send you free seals if you can give me part numbers.
