So, today I went out and picked up this Johnson. Only paid 35 bucks for it. But she’s locked up tight. Pulled the plugs, they look fine. Cylinders just look dry, not to rusty. So I guess what’s the magic sauce to get the pistons moving again? Thinking of making up some half ATF and half acetone. Hear that works wonders.
September 30, 2018 at 12:59 am #83715The 50/50 acetone/atf mix is good. Some use 50/50 acetone and brake fluid. Some use Marvel Mystery Oil. I like PB Blaster.

I used Marvel Mystery Oil, a week’s worth of time, and a big dadgum breaker bar on my last one.
September 30, 2018 at 5:32 am #83726If you can find a way to get lubricant into the crankcase that will help. I have found rust on the crankshaft that made it not turn over. Rust in there will also damage bushing surfaces when you do turn it over. I usually use Marvel mystery oil, but have tried the others.
September 30, 2018 at 10:40 am #83729I like PB Blaster, too. Be sure to strap-wrench the flywheel. Don’t just try to turn the flywheel nut. It will just over tighten and possibly break the flywheel. However, be advised that, in my experience, about 99 times out of 100, if you are able to break it free and it starts turning over, the piston rings will still be stuck in their grooves.
Long live American manufacturing!

Wanted to try my hand at straightening the tank on it too. Maybe I’ll take the motor completely apart and see what I can do with it. Not sure yet what I want to do. I got the speeditwin running, so now I’m out of a project. I’d also like to let my kids cruise around our pond in a 14’ boat with this motor .
