Need a little help on how to set the points on a Johnson A45.
Thanks in advance, SteveJuly 8, 2021 at 6:33 pm #242276This is the magneto on my 1929 A-45.
I can’t remember if I had any problems, but it appears that
you loosen the binding screw on the “U” shape portion,
then use a little wrench to turn the movable half of the point
set. Presume it’s .020 gap on the points, and don’t forget
to snug that binding screw back up…… at least that’s what
it looks like. Is the cam for the points on the crankshaft or
the flywheel hub? If on the flywheel hub, I presume there’s
a hole in the top of the flywheel to set the points through.
Prepare to be boarded!

A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

July 8, 2021 at 11:30 pm #242303Thanks TBH. I never would have found those marks without you help. Buccaneer, The point assembly attached is to the mag plate by 2 screws, but the holes in the point assembly are oblong allowing the point assembly to be adjusted in it’s position on the mag plate . Is that for rough positioning and the adjustable point half for fine tuning the points?
July 8, 2021 at 11:32 pm #242304Buc, the point cam is on the flywheel hub.
July 9, 2021 at 6:42 am #242310Yes,you may have to change the points location on the plate in order to time their opening. When the points open is more important than the exact amount that they open.

Steve, “rough setting” or best geometry between the points arm and flywheel
cam perhaps. I think Tubs mentioned the timing marks on the flywheel
and plate to me, but I can’t remember if I found them on mine.Prepare to be boarded!

Unless someone makes you aware of them you’re not
going to know what they’re for, if you even see them.
I believe it was a Tom Manley reply that first made me
aware of them. Of course I could have read the manual
but I never have time for that.

July 9, 2021 at 10:59 am #242319Thanks to you guys, the motor is now alive! Would any of you know the initial carb setting and proper starting procedure?
July 9, 2021 at 11:37 am #242324Neadle valve 1 1/2 turns out from seated.Throttle lever on side of carb all the way down on C for choke.Mag plate handle centered over carb.Hold stem of float valve down until you get a little gas leaking around it.You can open the compression relief by pushing lever up,but it’s not necessary.Give it a good pull and you’re on your way.Once underway move carb lever up to F and advance mag lever to the right as you face motor. The motor must be moving through water for the cooling system to work
