Has anyone had any luck brazing drive or prop shafts
to repair the grooved area where the seals go?
The drive shaft on the Mark 5 Merc I’m working on
could use some help. The shaft size is .455, and
too small for any available speedi-sleeve that I’ve
found. I’ve tried JB Weld in the grooves in the past,
and it did not hold up.
I have a lathe to assist in turning down the brazing.
      Suggestions welcomed, Thanks!

Check into a ”speedi-sleeve"? I believe that’s the correct term.

I have done the brazing thing in the past. Ok for one that isn’t going to be used much, but wears out with a lot of use.

Frank, how much would you suggest to grind out the
groove in the shaft seal area before brazing?

Oh, I dunno, shouldn’t take a whole lot. If you did a good brazing job, the brass shouldn’t be coming loose, if that is what you are thinking. Personally, I’m more concerned with the effect of the required heat and its effect on the strength of the shaft. The whole thing is shade tree engineering, so I guess you just go by your gut feeling. And take a paddle when you go out.

Frank, I’ll take a paddle, and some chewing gum, as the
                    boat is 57 years old!
Somebody needs to make speedi sleeves for the
                    Mark 5/6 shafts!

Hey, you admitted you have a lathe. Perhaps your name is "Somebody"?

I have braised in pits & like in driveshafts, axles & hubs before & had good results. I had to do some electrial in trade to use his lathe.
