Pardon me if this has been brought up before but I don’t remember seeing it: Is anybody reproducing the little driver tool that knocks the shift rod bushing out of the gear case on small to mid size OMC engines, so you can replace the o-ring? I also can’t find my OMC tool catalog to know what part number the tool is…

Frank used to make them but explains why he doesn’t anymore on his web site, also with an alternative way to remove the bushing. I have the number as 304514.

Okay, thanks, Steve. Yes, I know that the tool sometimes doesn’t work. We had one at my old job and it was kind of hit or miss. I have actually tapped the bushing with a 5/16" tap without knowing others have already done it. It works but I used to try to reuse the bushing, which seemed sketchy. Oh well, I guess I will keep doing it that way. Thanks for the quick answer!

            Bill,

What I use first is a Starrett 5/16” pin punch. It fits through the casting but not the bushing.
