Yesterday I finally got around to test starting the 1950 Evinrude Speeditwin
that I fixed up last winter. The motor was test started “out of water” on
the back of the boat. It started up in three or four pulls, and I ran it
just about 30 seconds…… just enough time to lean it out some and
fill the garage up with thick blue smoke before I had to evacuate the primise.

It seemed hopeful, so my son and I took it to the lake today to try it out.
With 15 to 25 mph winds and the lake access on the wrong side of the
lake, with small white caps, we went for lake #2 which was still windy,
      but no white caps.

I proceeded to “flood” the engine without trying too hard. Perhaps I should
have opened the tank vent on the hot gas tank before the petcock, as
when I opened the petcock, I seen a shot of gas squirt into the carb throat.
Decided not to prime the engine, but after quite a few pulls, got no where,
so primed a little, and still got no where. Decided it had to be flooded, so closed
the petcock and opened the throttle wide open and started to get signs of life and “many”
pulls, and finally it started, and away we went. It was really loaded up,
so I started leaning it out. All was well for about 150 yards. Not sure if I leaned it
out too far, put it spit and popped a couple of times, and my efforts to “enrichen”
      were futile, and it quit.
As I pulled the engine over another 100 times :-(, the wind was pushing us across the
lake the wrong direction. Asked my son to start rowing back toward the landing,
but him not being a Voyageur, he was not able to make any headway.
The only smart thing I did today was to throw in a 1950’s Lightwin in the bottom
of the boat. There wasn’t much room to mount it on the transom with the Speeditwin
there, but did so, but with little room to swivel the motor and actually “steer” the boat
toward the landing. I felt like I was trying pilot an ocean liner back to the dock in strong winds.
The little Lightwin got us there, but had to run it wide open to over come the winds.

That concludes the “adventure” part of my post. Now the questions…..
Has anyone rigged up water muffs for their Speeditwin? Thought I’d ask
so I don’t have to re-invent the wheel if someone has a design that works.
Looks like it would have to be a vee shaped affair that covered the water intake holes
on the front leading edge, on both sides of the lower unit housing.

I’ve never checked compression on this engine, as it seemed pretty adequate pulling it over.
Anyone know what’s acceptable on these motors?

Things didn’t go exactly as planned today, but at least I got “out” and had a little adventure.

Well, sorry it didn’t go as planned, but it sure looks great on the back of that boat!! I’m sure you’ll get it figured out.

          Bucc,

I had one backfire and shear the flywheel key. Cranked it about 100 times too before I figured it out. Hope this is not your problem, but something to check.

David, thanks for the heads up on the flywheel key. I figure
that I’d give my shoulder a couple days rest before I start
pulling on it some more, but was hoping to figure out
a way to hook it up to a garden hose also.

Tubs, your Lightwin looks the same or very close to the 56 I have.
Also have a 54 Lightwin……. both great runners.
Nice and light to throw in the boat as well!

Regarding “starting” the Speeditwin, does anyone have a digital copy of an owner’s
manual that tells initial carb settings, starting instructions, etc.? Thanks.

The Lightwin that saved my day was given to me by my uncle, so that
motor is a keeper for sure.
