I am rebuilding a 1960 Merc 800 DR lower unit. The various studs are a mix of stainless steel, and steel. I want to change the steel studs to stainless. Noodling around on the Innanet, I have been unable to find stainless studs to match the steel studs. Am thinking about buying stainless bolts, cutting them to length and threading the cut end. What is the opinion of the hive mind?
TIA

January 5, 2016 at 5:54 pm #29680You can get Mercury studs from Joe Poole as he is a dealer from the 50’s. He had the special studs I needed to adapt a 600 gearcase to a mark 75 tower.
Fergusion Poole is in the net.January 5, 2016 at 8:19 pm #29683I am in the habit of saving studs from motors I’ve parted out, particularly stainless ones. If you have the length, diameter, and thread type, I might be able to dig some out. By thread type, I mean coarse/fine. Mercury sometimes put coarse on the side threaded into the casting, and fine thread on the nutted side. Also might need the proportions as some studs had the threads running deeper than others. A pic of your stud(s) might help.
January 5, 2016 at 8:57 pm #29685Yes, the studs do have fine threads on the nutted end, and coarse threads on the end that screws into the casting. No supplier that I have found, including McMaster Carr, stocks studs with differing threads. Darn! I just bought a bunch o’ parts from Joe Poole…
Sizes I’m looking for are:
7/16"X 3 1/4" 2 ea.
7/16"X 2" 2 ea.
5/16"X 3" 2 ea.
LarryJanuary 5, 2016 at 11:54 pm #29686cruising thru Google just for giggles,
I found some s/s studs in any length and thread
at a pretty hefty price. Mostly used in the high end automotive line
such as header and engine bolts and studs.
In my world, I would cut off the bolts as you described.does thread lock and antiseize in the same hole cancel each other out ?

I’ve wondered the same thing ! and my guess is yes 😆 At least the anti seize would negate the thread lock.
January 9, 2016 at 12:09 pm #29879Larry – PM me with your mailing address and I’ll send you a pair of 3-inch 5/16 studs. I couldn’t find any 7/16 in my collection.
