One of the things I enjoy is figuring out what’s
wrong with something.
This hobby provides a lot of fun in that regard.
Many like minded individuals frequent this board.
This is for them.
This was something someone did with good
intentions but ended up having a negative
result. Something I have been guilty of more
times that I am wiling to admit.
This is not a quiz or looking for a response.
I have figured it out.
I’ll reveal what I found in a couple days.
Just something to ponder for those who enjoy
trying to solve a mystery.

April 13, 2023 at 5:02 pm #275127I’m not sure but maybe sticking float when bowl was empty?
April 13, 2023 at 5:22 pm #275128Plugged up vent to the carb bowl? Somehow related to the heating and cooling?
Long live American manufacturing!
April 13, 2023 at 6:37 pm #275130Is the tank vent plugged? Or have you switched out the vented valve?

When I open the fuel shut off and the gas goes into the “warm”
carburetor, it vaporizes some. Someone added this little brass
bushing for a better fit of the float needle. It’s not so tight that
the float pin sticks but when pressure is created in the float
bowl it cant escape fast enough forcing fuel out the main jet
– as billw has described.
Its done so well that it looks factory. I was considering drilling
a hole in cover when I noticed none of the other carb’s I was
looking at, for some indication of what the problem could be,
has this bushing in the cover.

April 16, 2023 at 11:46 am #275188Can you simply widen the opening in that added brass bushing so there’s a bit more slop for the needle to move around and allow air to flow by it more readily?
Is the brass bushing swelling from heat too quickly and reducing that space around the needle?

Before posting the video I increased the size
of the hole in the bushing to be sure I understood
the problem. Opening the hole just .004 more
seemed to have solved the problem.

April 16, 2023 at 3:56 pm #275191There should be a vent hole in that bowl cover?

It seems that the hole for the float needle is also the
bowl vent.
I have several of these carburetors and there
is no indication that any of them had a separate
vent hole.
Checking some of the other carb. bowl covers I
have, its understandable why someone would
think installing a bushing would be an improvement.
Actually now that I have made the hole large
enough so the bowl can vent it is an improvement.
Necessary? Probably not.
