this should be a big one, lets hear what brand oil and why you use it,i i’m running evinrude xd30 why i use it is it’s factory oil and i never had a problem with it runs as clean as a synthetic but in my area the price is starting to go up so i might switch to the penzoil brand.
June 23, 2016 at 8:52 am #38800I use walmarts brand non detergent 30 weight oil. About $2.44 a quart. Wish they sold 40 weight as that’s what was recomended back in the day. One pint to the gallon. This new non detergent oil must be far superior to what they pumped out of the ground 70 years ago. Of course that’s what they say.
June 23, 2016 at 12:31 pm #38802Trying to find the Penzoil Synth Bio oil in my area to give it a try. I don’t feel good about putting that much crap in waters I fish in, or waters that people get their water supply from. If I can clean it up a bit, I will
Yes, I could be running an Etec or 4 stroke, but they don’t have as much mojo 🙂
June 23, 2016 at 12:52 pm #38804I won a gallon of Evinrude XD-30, so I am using that up for now. I was using Mystic/Citgo Sea&Sno synthetic blend with great success. I later realized it was not TCW-III rated. I couldn’t figure why it was not rated for that, and yet protects watercraft and snowmobiles that operate at 10,000 RPM etc. Also rated for lawn mowers, leaf blowers……etc. 😕 I then went with Pennzoil, but felt it smoked more than the sea & sno. I tried Mystic TCW-III oil, and has been fine, but I really like the synthetic blends. I have to feel that they protect better, but Citgo/Mystic didn’t want to endure the cost of TCW-III rating. Great article about the oils on the net I read recently, I just can’t remember where. 🙄 I run most of my motors at 48:1 (1 pint to 6 gallon) as recommended my Mercury/OMC. (All of my motors with full roller bearings get 48:1) I try to not over oil as I feel as ShoestringMariner stated. I love the waters I run in, and want to be as responsible as I can be. I run my FD-10 at 24:1 and my Fleetwin’s a bit richer at 20:1 with good results. I may go back to the sea & sno, have not made up my mind.

June 23, 2016 at 2:47 pm #38807Quicksilver Premium Plus Synthetic Blend. Why? good stuff and I got 3 gallons for $27 from Amazon. Still had to buy $18 worth of more stuff to get free shipping, but these days that’s not too hard to do!
June 23, 2016 at 3:24 pm #38808I use the cheapest oil I can find that is rated TC-W3. It is usually some kind of store brand oil. Since Walmart or any other store does not make oil you can be sure some brand name oil company makes it. After extensive research I found out that Pennzoil made the Walmart Supertec oil. Since they made store brand oil for Walmart, I suspect they are willing to make it for any retail store that wants it. Since the more they make the cheaper they can make all their oil, they would want to make it for as many retail stores as possible.
Since it would be cheaper to use the exact same formula they use for their own brand, since changes on the production line are costly, I suspect it is the very same stuff. Some would say that if there was an expensive additive in their name brand that was not desperately needed to meet the TC-W3 specifications, they might not use it and therefore the store brand would be different. My opinion is, that if there was an expensive additive that was not needed to meet all the oil specs. for TC-W3, they wouldn’t even put it in their name brand either.
The odds are that the store brands are EXACTLY the same as the name brand…so save your money. I have never had any problem with using the cheapest oil. Right now I am using a formula 1 brand (Canadian Tire store brand) that I bought for $1.69 a litre. Works great.
June 23, 2016 at 4:01 pm #38812As to add to opsyeagle’s statement, the store brand could be the same as the name brand. The oil passes through the same pipes and pumps and valves. It could also be the same as the premium as oil remaining in the lines could be pumped into the next batch of containers. And the premium could be nothing more than regular as the pipes are flushed out.
June 23, 2016 at 5:36 pm #38816I use factory oils for my Merc’s, gets Merc oil & OMC oil for those. My Scotts get omc premix brand oil too. I haven’t tried any of the fancy oils yet. What is the cleanest one to try that has the good rating but works with 50’s motors? I have heard of others running 50% premix & 50% nondeturgent 50 wt for the older motors, Thoughts please?
June 23, 2016 at 6:35 pm #38819I wonder where I can buy 50 weight non-detergent oil? I have not seen this product since the 70’s. I would like to try this on a couple older worn motors that I have. Barrel cruising mostly.
June 23, 2016 at 8:03 pm #38823Back in the late 90’s I was attending outboard service training in Dallas Texas, as I had done every winter. The subject of 2 cycle oil came up during class. I remember telling the instructor that I had always used Merc Premium Plus [unlike Mercury Premium] in all my engines as well in everything we sold at the dealership… I wish that I would have written down everything he told me about oil that day, cause now I have forgotton a few of the details. He did tell me that Mercury Marine had done extensive endurance testing of the Quicksilver Premium Plus 2 cycle TCW 3 oil, and compared to others [at the time] it was far superior, and far exceeded TCW3 ratings. He also said that some of the oil that was tested would barely meet the TCW3 rating, but since it technically made the cut, it received the rating. I remember when they came out with the DFI outboard oil for the Optimax, Mercury stated [at that time] that it was perfectly acceptable to run the Premium Plus oil in the Optimax engines, or of course you could use the DFI oil, made for the direct injection engines. So, in short, I have always used Quicksilver Premium Plus in everything, and have for 25 years now. I do not wish to debate what oil is better or worse, nor will I debate about fuel oil ratio’s. Just wanted to throw out my humble opinion, respectfully..
