I put my Johnson J 65 back together and found this piece left over.
I took the motor apart a year ago. I don’t remember where that piece came from. Was this part of the gear case?
Do I have that set screw in the front of the gear case right? I think it’s meant to adjust the prop shaft and gears, but it’s not very streamlined, is it?
Should there be a washer at the base of the water pump? There’s a set screw that holds that assembly there but it’s not snug up to the gear case.
If you’ve followed me this far, the J 65 is supposed to use a Champion C7 spark plug but they are discontinued. Champion suggests that D16 is a replacement. Is that right?
January 2, 2016 at 3:08 pm #29554I watched my father do all kinds of mechanical projects
from old cars to motorcycles to boat motors . . . .
after the motor was all back together and running, he had
a coffee can with extra parts in it (that he forgot to put in).
and when asked about them, his favorite response was (and which I still use today)
"in my world, that is what we call "spares".LoL, so that may be one of your spares ???

This would be a great prank! I sure hope non of my PTBC friends are reading this…..
There weren’t any allen head set screws in that motor originally.
Could be a replacement or somehow got dropped in one
of your parts containers when you weren’t looking?????I like the spare parts story. They were talking about that on Car Talk once and they said that eventually you have enough pieces left over to make another car.
In a related story, we bought a used Suburu for my daughter, from my mechanic. The guy was impressed that my daughter had saved up $3000 to buy her own car, and he gave us/her a great deal. In prepping the car, he discovered that the AWD wasn’t working right so he disabled it and asked us to come back in a few weeks and he’d repair it. Well, I forgot about it and we had a snow storm coming up, and he called us to schedule the repair. (sweet). It took longer than expected. He called me the second day to say that "one of the boys" put in a new AWD kit, got it all assembled, and ended up with an extra washer. He wasn’t satisfied with that so he took it all apart again and installed the missing washer. AND, he wouldn’t accept any payment for the work.
If you turn off the news for awhile, there are plenty of reasons to feel hopeful about the world.

-DJanuary 2, 2016 at 4:51 pm #29562Good Morning David!
Looks like most of your questions have been answered but I’ll also add my 2 cents.
Forward gearcase adjusting screw just kinda’ hangs out there.
No washer under the water pump.
The set screw (stbd. side gearcase) that holds the water pump in place has a thin locknut that anchors that set screw
in place. Any gap between pump and case is just that, a gap. (the set screw into the pump case determines that) I’ve seen them
with gaps and no gaps. I checked with Bob Zipps on that.
My J – 65 runs very nicely all day long with a D – 9 plug.
(My gearcase has an Allen plug for greasing but I’m sure it’s not original)
See you at Bud’s place!
