I have done dozens and dozens impeller replacements on the mid 50’s/60’s OMC motors. Just began my winter project of refurbishing a TN-27. I will be replacing the impeller and am wondering if there are any tips/techniques to the replacement and pulling the L/U. I’m sure the neutral shift cable must be disconnected but how and where? What is the procedure for pulling the lower unit?
Thanks for the help.

November 21, 2018 at 3:20 pm #154461First remove the lower cowl. The shift cable is connected to the bottom of the shift lever mechanism by a set screw. Loosen the set screw and the cable will come down the tube along with the lower unit as it is removed. When replacing the lower unit the cable must be threaded back up the tube and reconnected to the mechanism under slight tension while retightening the set screw. The rest of the procedure is pretty straight forward with a dose of common sense.
You will probably also need new leather primer seals and instructions for your carburetor. If so, send $10.00 cash and a SASE (self addressed stamped envelope) to me Lloyd Lautner, 9289 North Long Lake Road, Traverse City Michigan, 49685. Price recently increased to 10 bucks as it is getting hard to find the proper oil tanned leather of the right thickness. More good info at: pochefamily.org/outboard. Hope that helps!November 21, 2018 at 11:23 pm #154535If this is the model I am thinking of its a good idea to drain the LU lube before removing it.

November 22, 2018 at 10:40 am #154630Thanks guys. I have not had time to read through all of the kindly provided information but I am thinking that SAE 80/90 gear oil is correct for the TN L/U?
