I’ve been cleaning up an old TN-27 and giving it a new coat of paint. I’m finding it hard to tell if the silver parts on the motor (tank ring, clutch lever, timing lever etc.) originally came painted, or if they were just brush finished/ polished. Does anyone know how these parts were finished in the factory?

There’s no pitting on the tank ring -seems like it would clean up nicely with the benchtop buffer . I don’t love the idea of covering aluminum parts with an aluminum colored paint, but wouldn’t have reservations about it if this is how it was done originally.

Originally, the parts you mentioned came from the factory with “Dull Aluminum” paint. The factory paint was not very durable, and that’s why it may be difficult to tell.

For a factory correct restoration, the parts should be painted. There are, however, lots of restorations where the tank ring has been polished to a high luster, and they can look very nice.
