Transom height

Absent information for a specific motor,is there a rule of thumb for determining transom height on really old ones?

15in short shaft 20in long shaft.. keep the cavitation plate near the bottom of the boat.

The "standard" transom was at a 12 degree angle so it measures more than the 15 or 20 inches given as standard.
