Hello dear Aomcian~
I have this engine :
Johnson 5hp
model CD-12
seriel no : 1212984
the question is where can i find parts like piston, waterpump kit and electrical parts?
thanks
June 8, 2025 at 6:59 am #297158The Johnson CD-12 is a 1955 5.5 hp. Parts are widely available.

Impeller and ignition components can be found at large online retailers. For pistons, our website has a classified section where you can place a free ad. Good used ones are fine as long as the connecting rod caps have been kept with the original piston and in the same orientation.
Another good source, and good for reference is marineengine.com. They provide updated part numbers. Some parts such as the coils have updated numbers.

June 8, 2025 at 6:49 pm #297163The coils and other ignition parts are available after market, but more obscure parts would most likely come from parts motors. There are usually a lot of parts on Ebay. Find out what you need and start looking.

June 10, 2025 at 8:43 am #297190Why is it that you are looking for pistons? Most of these engines do not require internal rebuilding unless there is obvious damage the pistons or cylinder walls. These engines also have fairly low compression, so don’t let low compression readings concern you as well, unless there is a big difference between the two cylinders.
June 10, 2025 at 11:16 pm #297210I would look on Ebay for pistons. As far as impellers go, there should be replacement parts on Ebay or Amazon. I believe that most of the lower unit on the 5.5 Johnson is the same as the Evinrude Fleetwin from 1955 (I was looking at both a CD-12 and a Fleetwin I own today and noticed that the lower units looked eerily similar). If you have issues finding parts for the lower unit, you may be able to find one from the Fleetwin that would fit the CD-12. Coils can be found on Amazon. Look for the OMC universal coil type. I do now know where to find a condenser, might want to try Ebay? If you have issues with all of these parts, you may just want to buy a new motor. New pistons, coils, and an impeller would probably run at least $100 in Ebay prices, and you may be able to buy a less problematic motor for that. Take my advice with a grain of salt as I am newer to antique outboards and have absolutely no expertise in this field. Good luck getting it running.

1955 Johnson CD-12 5.5 hpJune 10, 2025 at 11:25 pm #297212Unless you are in a rush, take some time to find good deals on quality parts, because if you rush into it, you will eventually spend more money than the price of another motor and regret it later. Deals for motors will pop up on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist, and spending too much time and/or money on a motor will be worthless when a deal pops up a month later. Finding good parts is especially true if this motor has sentimental value.

that name plate and transom bracket looks bad (neglected) possibly an old salty. If the rest looks like that I would look for a grandpa motor. post full pictures..cowl L.U. GC etc…

condensers are everywhere …incl dealers.. ! or can be repaired easy . see m.Mohat articles on condensers series 1-4

June 11, 2025 at 11:20 am #297231I agree with crosbyman. If the rest of the motor is in the same condition as the name plate and it has little sentimental value, it might not be worth restoring. Here in Wisconsin, there are a few CD-12s on Facebook Marketplace for about 150 each, and the time and money you would spend trying to restore a motor with a lot of problems would not be worth it. If it has sentimental value it may be more worthwhile to keep it as a wall hanger. Otherwise, if it has a lot of issues I would part it out and buy another motor. There are so many interesting outboards out there for low-ish prices that your time is better spent restoring a few motors in good mechanical condition as opposed to one in poor condition. Ebay prices for anything regarding motors will probably be at least twice what you would get from somebody off of Facebook or Craigslist. Keep this in mind if you decide to buy another motor.
