July 23, 2023 at 7:50 am #278391Recently I have been reading GL5 gear oils contain additional sulphur to protect steel gear faces. But, yellow metals like brass ,copper and bronze erode from it. Car differentials and transmissions that have soft metal bushings and or synchronizers don’t seem to like it. Old outboard gear cases may be similar. Something to look into.
July 23, 2023 at 8:12 am #278392What I’ve been doing is using the basic 90w gear lube on motors that are “in the process”….a few tripe to the lake to get various issues sorted out and just to evaluate the overall condition of a motor.
If it passes all the tests and has a tight gearcase (or accepts a re-seal successfully….) then I’ll do a final fill with the marine stuff. Walmart also sells a marine version at a good price…. Not usually available in the store….you have to order it on line and the last time I did that there was a $35.00 minimum for free shipping to my house. So; I add a few things to reach that.

July 24, 2023 at 1:11 am #278434I don’t take chances, I use either OMC or Mercury brand oils. I have heard that the marine brand oils have rust inhiditors & designed for the purpose. I don’t really know if there is a difference or not, but gives me peacee of mind using what the factory uses.
