Hello, I have a 1978 Johnson/Evinrude 55HP (M#55EL78S) that I am trying to convert over from conventional controls to a tiller system. Does anyone know what years and HP motor I could use as a parts donor? Thanks.
October 30, 2015 at 2:40 pm #26275The closest thing I can find is a J50RL79C. Except for maybe a commercial motor (I didn’t see one) ’79 is the first year for this model platform to offer a tiller handle. Not sure how many of those were built. If you look in the parts book (MarineEngine.com) you can see what all is involved with the change to tiller operation. It would be best to find a motor obviously. This motor also has rope start, but the electric start can be maintained if desired.Hope this helps!

October 31, 2015 at 1:14 am #26299I suppose tiller models were built, but I’ve never seen one. Weren’t they kind of a Rube Goldberg? I doubt there are many out there to scavenge.
October 31, 2015 at 8:34 am #26309Someone on C-list just messaged me "Would be looking for a 40-60 hp twin cylinder from 1978-1988". Does this sound correct to you guys? Thanks again -Frank
October 31, 2015 at 2:33 pm #26317The first tiller option I am aware of is 1979. These are mostly commercial units or models used in South America or Alaska hence Frank not seeing one. Probably some poor dealer somewhere ordered one by mistake or a guy thought it would be cool to have one. I’m not sure everything stayed the same till 1988, but that would be as far as you could go because the whole platform changed it 1989. Several block changes happened with regard to shift linkage position, etc, so a donor engine is your best bet even if it is tough to find. The 1977, ’78’ ’79 model motors had some durability issues that you should avoid if possible. In 1980 the block became a lost foam design and corrected those concerns. Much better engine from then on. It would be better to just look for a later model tiller motor if that is what you desire. Just my opinion. I could be wrong.

Thanks again -FrankI’m not quite sure what your question is about this CL message, but OMC did make two cylinder outboards in that horsepower range during those years.
