November 1, 2019 at 8:59 am #186266I use a long 1/8″ drill to clean these out. However the danger is that you can easily drill past the opening and into the gearcase. I’d poke around with a stiff wire or small rod before trying a drill. Bob 1937 Champion D2C Deluxe Lite Twin

The drill bit would have to be a foot long.-

November 1, 2019 at 3:02 pm #186286My ‘56 Johnson was stopped up solid with hard packed sand that seemed like cement. I did what Buc suggested above then finished up by cleaning the cavity out with a jet nozzle on my pressure washer. Bob 1937 Champion D2C Deluxe Lite Twin

"Every time you remove a broken or seized bolt an angel gets his wings."November 1, 2019 at 6:59 pm #186293My 1/8 drill was 12″ long. It cost about $7.00 on Ebay two years ago. I broke about an inch off the end clearing out one of these drain holes. (Shorter drill still works.) The problem is that you may not be able to see the end of the drill going past the exterior drain hole. Vertical and horizontal holes may not line up exactly. If you do drill thru into the gearbox an epoxy repair can be done. Best to proceed very cautiously and not use a power drill. I like a separate loose chuck to get a grip, pull the drill out often and clean the flutes as you go. November 1, 2019 at 7:13 pm #186296
