I would like to mount the resistor inside the hood (lower pan) of a 1955 25 hp Johnson RDE-17
I will be running a 12 volt starter.
What resistor do you guys suggest to use. Please keep in mind size.October 13, 2021 at 6:01 pm #248034resistors are usually for dropping 12 volts batteries down for 6 volt starters.
if your starter is 12v. I do not think you need to add a resistor do you …maybe for a 6v selenoid or choke ??

October 13, 2021 at 6:15 pm #248035I apologize for not making myself clear.
I have a 12 battery
I have a 12 starter
But I have a 6 volt choke solenoid
Can I use some kind of resistor on the 6 volt choke solenoid so the choke solenoid will run on 12 volts?
If I can-what brand resistor should I purchase?? The smaller the betterOctober 13, 2021 at 9:24 pm #248047Somebody may chime in with the ohms/watts combination but if you simply measure the current flowing in your selenoid when energized at 6 volts you can calculate the internal resistance
with V/I=Radding another equivalent R value resistor in series with the selenoid should do it when pushing it with 12volts .
Since the selenoid is used for very short period you are likely safe with a 5 -10 watt rated resistor or try to find a similar resistance ballast in automotive parts .
you could even test it with a common 12 v light bulb acting as a ballast resistor.
jmho
btw do a search on ballast resistor… I see you had posts on this very subject subject back to 2018 !! with lots of feedback

October 14, 2021 at 6:09 pm #248098Just using another choke is too simple LOL
In reality -I have few 6 volt choke solenoids that I would like to use up
12 volt is Unavailable from Marine engine

If I went Ebay route to get 12 volt . It would be cheaper to use a resistor with what I have.October 14, 2021 at 9:29 pm #248113Wire 2 solenoids in series?
October 15, 2021 at 7:09 am #248118Yes, in series… end to end, not parallel.
