    Hi,

I was given a 1958 Johnson Seahorse (10hp) that was DOA.  It had compression of 80 on top and 70 on the bottom.  After a carb rebuild, new coils, points, condensers, wires/plugs, and adding a fuel pump, and fuel mix of 24:1,  I was able to get it running.  According to various sources, when rebuilding the carb and setting the low and high-speed adjustment needles, I set the low to 1.5 turns out from closed and the high speed at 3/4 turns.  Sometimes it runs as long as I want it and other times only a few seconds and I can’t figure out why.  Seems to have some sort of fuel/air mix issue, but I can’t figure it out and I’d like to take it to someone who can help.

I live in Philadelphia and I’m hoping someone can recommend a knowledgeable and honest marine mechanic who can help with this issue.  I’m also open to suggestions or direction from anyone that has any experience with these motors or issues

    Thanks

BTW…..I also noticed at times it slips into gear despite the shifter being in the neutral position.  I move the shifter back and forth a few times and it slips into neutral.  The issue above occurs when the gear is in neutral. I’m wondering if this could be something tied to the above, where it slips into gear while pulling the starter cord and placing a load on the motor, not allowing it to start or stay on.
