Working on a 1956 Sea King 12 HP and opened the crankcase to replace the lower crankshaft seal to prevent future water leakage. The crankshaft is lightly rusted and slightly pitted in the seal area. Other than that seal area the motor internals look fine. It ran well when I tried it on the water in September.
If bearings were needle type I would be looking for a crankshaft but this motor has bronze bearings. I am thinking of just taking fine wet or dry to smooth the seal area up a bit and then put in a new seal. Anyone have experience with this approach? I would appreciate any advice.
Thank you.
