Yes, I have looked at the key and it is 1/8" off . . .
I’m going fishing now and will address it tomorrow.
Does not seem to be a big deal for now…. I will make it work.THANKS to one and all

In my haste to get it back together, I did not dry fit it first.
I just put the long and short side by side and they "appeared" to match.
So I had the key slot cut.
not knowing the bottom splines were 1/8" too short.
anyways, it is fixed now . . . just as per factory specs.thanks thanks and double thanks to everyone !!

January 31, 2016 at 5:55 pm #31121On the lower end of the shaft if you decide you can drop the shaft further into the case, you can just under cut the shaft like it is at the top? That way you don’t have to try and match the splines. If you have a way to turn the shaft (big drill, drill press) and a good file it shouldn’t take too long to file the shaft down to the bottom of the spline depth. Then the shaft diameter will pass into the pinion gear. I know you don’t want to go back to the machine shop! Wish I had it up here! My son has a lathe and wouldn’t take but a minute to cut it for you. That’s how I would handle it. OMC did things like that all the time. You can go back and make another impeller key just offset all the way to the top of the impeller. You did it once, you will be better at it this time. Just some ideas off the top of my head for what I understand the problem to be.

I am not sure that piggy-backing onto this thread is best (maybe I should have started a new thread), but I was hoping to understand more about two nice used short shaft drive shafts we have. One appears just as this ebay posting: http://www.ebay.com/itm/USED-JOHNSON-EV … ue&vxp=mtr
If this can be trusted, then obviously the part number is 304933, but in this case I was hoping to understand how the 554314 or the supersession 384961 shafts differ, and does not seem to supersede the 304933 (or vice versa). Our shaft is 27 & 9/16 inches long, .624 inches in diameter, has 14 splines on both ends, and the 1/8 inch diameter hole for the impeller pin is approximately 9 & 3/4 inches center from the pinion end.

Again if this can be trusted, then obviously the part number is 378802. Our shaft is 27 & 9/16 inches long, .624 inches in diameter, has 14 splines on both ends, and the woodruff key slot is approximately 10 inches center from the pinion end. Will this shaft correctly replace the one above if the impeller is also changed (to the style for a woodruff key)? I ask as the center of the woodruff key slot is approximately 1/4 inch closer to the crankshaft end than the pin hole of the first shaft described. Thank You in advance for any correction, confirmation, or additional information that can be provided.Regards,
