      Thanks for all the suggestions.

      No indication of twist.

Could not see a part number but doubt it’s other than original.

Don’t have another 5.5 to measure but do have a ’73 6 hp which appears to have the same parts. Maximum dimension from lever end to side cover surface on block is about 2 1/16 on both.

Agree that the "start" "shift" etc positions are only approximate but for someone learning how to run the motor it would be helpful to have them properly aligned, rather than confusingly misaligned.

The only really variable element in that linkage setup is the pinion cup. The throttle gear coupling is controlled by the ‘big’ tooth and gap, and the pinion gear at the end of the shaft is in a fixed position. The cup has to be aligned so that the rightmost tooth on the pinion gear engages the rightmost tooth on the pinion cup (or close). On my three 5.5 and 6-hp motors, the horizontal end of the throttle shaft is roughly parallel to the block at idle.
I suspect that the lack of performance may be due to being ‘out of sync’ or that the mag plate simply isn’t getting the proper advance (not enough throttle).
