      Wouldn’t at least one gear need to be pinned to the shaft so it
      turns the prop? My 5 hp Firestone is apart now, will have to look
      to see if it’s similar.

        So, I was at least half right. Not only prevents pulling it out, but also moving up and down. Makes sense now

          THe shift dog pins either the upper or lower gear to the shaft to get forward and reverse, In neutral both gears float on the shaft.
