I acquired this boat last Fall, and worked on it throughout the winter. I am wondering if anyone else has one of these, and what they have done to accommodate for a couple issues I’m having.

First, the rear steering cable guide pulleys like to get the wire (rubber coated aircraft control cable) jammed up, stopping my movement momentarily.

The cable also rubs along the throttle box. It appears to have all of the original hardware, other than the guide pulleys, which are later and a different style than the ones inside the cockpit.

This is with the steering somewhat rigged. It now has the tension springs, and the cable is tighter, so those pulleys stand upright. The issue I’m having is the cable getting stuck between the shive and the sides of the pulley.

You can also see how the cable runs alongside the control box.

This is more of a bird’s eye view of the layout, minus the strapping on the trailer.

I believe I need to find pulley more similar to the ones fore, with an all brass becket and eye strap, rather than a plastic shive paired with a brass clip, but I am still unsure.

Any help would be awesome. Would also be nice to find someone who also has one.

      Thanks!

Maybe try exposed metal control cables, the rubber coating could be causing more friction than it was designed for.

        -cool boat by the way.

          Aidan,

My 2 cents, for what it’s worth.  If you can move the first pullies from the wheel below the gunwale,  you can run the cables

up through the deck to the motor. That way you can remove the mid pully.  You can also remove the side mount throttle and install a deck mount runabout throttle.

Check Brown Tool and Machine which is now Akerstrom Tool and machine and click on throttles.  He has the through deck fairleads

          and deck mount throttles.

          Sincerely,

          Doug

            Doug,

Thanks for the great link and advice. However, this boat came with the original, matching DuoTrol steering drum and deadman’s throttle. I’d like to keep it as original as possible. Just trying to figure out how to get the cable to stop rubbing on the throttle.

How about a spacer for the throttle and run the cable behind the throttle.

Have you tried swapping front and rear pulleys?

just install a short piece  (12-24″) of  plastic   1/2 inch  pvc water  tubing   (or any appropriate color or clear  tubing) under the throttle area for the cable to slide without rubbing.  My old rig used common clothline cable ( the better quality type not the cheap stuff)

installing smaller side pulleys could lower the cable. side pulleys only guide the cable and the  are not subjected to much strain like corner ones

Re the rear pulleys, sounds like the space between the pulley and its bracket is large enough for the cable to jam in there, so can you squeeze the bracket part to make gap smaller?

Re cable rubbing on throttle –  I would look to install a small guide pulley below the throttle to keep cable on a lower run.
