      Hey, I’m pretty new to outboard motors and was trying to restore a 7516 Evinrude with my mentor. After some work, we got the motor to start but we noticed it was beginning to overheat and it didn’t look like the water was being cycled and expelled. We took the motor back apart and replaced the impeller. It’s hard to hear in the video, but we put the lower unit back on the midsection and wanted to know if this look like good enough water pressure considering we are testing with a drill.

        OK, from the photo you sent using the drill, it would appear that the water pump is working properly and producing enough pressure…

        There might be an issue with the base gasket you are using..  There are THREE different types of base gaskets that this engine family used during the years, and unfortunately, they will all “fit” and the screw holes will line up.   But, using the wrong base gasket will create a water leak between the exhaust housing and the powerhead…

        Perhaps you can post a picture of the base gasket you are using…
