Rebuilding a 1957 35 hp Johnson Golden Javelin and need to replace the wrist pins and needle bearings.

I have an expert machinist that builds race engines who can replace the needle bearing and wrist
Pins with Bronze Inserts with stainless wrist pins.

Is there any reason why Bronze inserts would not work in a 2 stroke motor?

Well, earlier motors such as 1955 25hp did have bronze bushings in the small end of the con rods. They wore badly, which was the reason they went to needle bearings. Yeah, to be fair, they had problems with the early needle bearings also.

The pre ’61 ten horse motors were notorious for wrist pin bushing wear even on 24:1 mix and that’s why they went to needle bearings on the 61-63 motors. Sure, bronze bushings would work but they would probably wear out long before needle bearings would.

Another option would be to obtain a pair of rods from the 1958 35hp, part #377272. These had a better single roller bearing as opposed to the 2 smaller bearings used on the ’57 model rods.

Interesting…are the ’58 rods the exact same size as the ’57?

Yes, they are the same size and as noted in the table Frank provided, the 377272 rods can be used on the 30 and 35hp OMC motors from 1956 thru the late 1950’s including your ’57 Javelin. I just swapped a set of the ’58 rods into my ’56 30hp. See pic for comparison – note different wrist pin bearings.

Edit – wrong 1958 part number posted in pic – should be 377272.
