Good day folks.
I have the manifold cover off the 1957 RDE-19 35hp.
How the heck does this come off?
Is this stuck on an alignment dowel or something?Love some advice on how not to break this.
Cheers

August 19, 2026 at 4:05 pm #326741I can slide a putty knife all around it – and it’s very tight at the top.
I will try a little PB blast to boot.
Thanks for the reply
August 19, 2026 at 6:07 pm #326748probably stuck from old adhesive some limited heat may release it… did you suspect reeds to be a problem enough to pull them ??

I’m not sure if they work or not.
This motor has never run.At this point I am tearing it down, splitting the case, and trying to rebuild it step by step.
I’m treating this particular motor as a place to learn how to repair / disassemble these things, because I want to keep fixing these old motors as a hobby.
I do appreciate the advice though.
I understand that if these things work, it’s best not to mess with it.August 19, 2026 at 8:13 pm #326752be warned… very addictive hobby. 🙂 at 76 I am now stuck with 4 4hp J&E 1 Merc 3.9hp 2 x4 HP mercs( one is a sail boat XL) 1x6hp fisherman one 5.5hp CD a 9.5hp Sportwin a 7.5HP Merc one TN27 5hp and a what seems to be a 1.5HP Elto egg beater
all winter restoral projects to spend time in the basement and not enough time or occasions to run them all. But everytime I see a bargain I cringe.

August 19, 2026 at 8:38 pm #326757I can’t tell for sure what’s happening in your picture but there is a retaining screw in the middle of the reed plate that needs to be removed. I can’t tell if you removed that screw or not because it’s covered up with some kind of gunk. If not already removed, that screw needs to come out to get the reed plate off. See attached markup of your picture.

I’ll hit it with some cleaner / penetrating oil and that sit for a bit.
August 20, 2026 at 12:13 am #326769After enlarging the picture, I can make out the corroded head of the slotted screw. Clean up the rust, apply some penetrating oil and a little heat if needed. Once the screw is out, you’re in business.
