The engine runs great, but I have been smelling some fuel under the cover and noticed fuel near the drain valve gasket. It runs down onto the engine mount and streaks down the outside of the exhaust tube. I am unsure exactly where it comes from, but the area around the drain valve is the wettest. Is it possible that the drain valve gasket is leaking that much? It looks dry above it. The area under the carb is fairly dry. I recently replaced the upper crankshaft seal. It idles much better at low speeds, but this leak seems to be getting a bit worse. Thanks for any help. I am not familiar with what the drain valve does.
March 8, 2025 at 11:56 pm #294513Could be one of the drain box gaskets, could be leaky crankcase halves….Guess I would try to wash it off, then watch closely while it is running..
March 9, 2025 at 8:28 am #294514hose looks like the oil return hose that send crankcase fuel oil residues back to the top bearing to oil it whereas the other picture shows the purge valve cover. the hose may have a split in it causing leak or the purge valve cover may be leaking as well.
has suggested by fleetwin try to oberserve exactly where it leaks or one possibility is if you use some UV light dye liquid in a small fuel supply fed into the carb. Run the engine and use a UV light to “light” up the leak
I hope you can see attached pics because that silly blue circle still shows up 🙁 for me anyway
your 62 40 hp is cousin with the RD24 johnson. this service manual is always useful in servicing oldies

just information on those purge valves making old outboards dirty…due to there dumping residues in the lake !
article states that at idle 1 liter per 20 gets waisted (dumped in the lake) so collected juices are just put back in the gas tank !

March 9, 2025 at 2:04 pm #294523Thanks for the tip on recapturing the fuel from the drain valve. I was wondering if there was a way to do that. I don’t like leaving slicks in the lake, but I do enjoy this old engine.
Once I get it out in the spring, I will see what happens when it runs. Since the drain valve seal is cheap and easy to replace, I might replace it to see if that does it.
If it is the crankcase seal, can I assume I need to tear down the whole engine to repair it? 🙁
As always, I am thankful for these forums and the knowledge shared here.
March 9, 2025 at 3:02 pm #294524if you are referring to the purge valve gasket ………you can probably just cut one up with gasket paper an exacto and paper punch
one of those rotating head leather punches also works good for small gasket holes
if you did not remove the cover I doubt it leaks
