Getting conflicting data. Parts manual shows part 308500.
Specs online doesn’t appear to be the correct shaft size.
Gale specs in manual says 1.000 inch shaft size.
Online says 1.110, and I eye up with my calipers about 1.250

      What’s up with this?
      Thanks.

M/E seems to imply that 308500 is replaced by 321504 (Sierra 18-8351). Could be. That thing was changed more than once, with different materials, single vs double lip, etc.

Measuring with an inch-stick (ruler) comes to 1-3/16″ (1.187″) for me.

As suggested, I poured oil around the crankshaft and spun the crankshaft
around. It’s blowing more bubbles than ten kids at a birthday party.
I had a little trouble with my photography, trying to hold the camera close
and spin my long wrench, lol, so sorry if you get dizzy!

I gotta assume my seal is B.O., correct?, but has anyone
tried this oil test after putting the new seal in?

Looking for “top” ideas on getting this little seal out without the OMC
puller, or ruining anything. I seem to be having trouble getting things
                apart lately!
                Thanks.

For kicks I researched the seal puller for this Gale and came up with
a photo of one. I have an old lathe, and would love to make one
for a project, but I have no taper attachment. 🙁
Looks like a strange thread as well.

So I want to order a new “upper crankshaft seal” The Gale parts manual is showing
                      0308500.

In looking on Marine Engine.com, they are showing the
0308500 seal and and a 0321504 seal. (For the same year Evin / Johnson 40 hp)
It doesn’t say that the later is superceding the first,
but is that the case, or is there a possibility of two totally different seals, i.e.,
                      a mid-year change or something?

Thanks to any of you parts experts that can enlighten me.

Are the two “original” seals shown the same seal, or a possibility
of different seals due to a mid year change or something?
One doesn’t say it’s superceded by the other.
It’s the upper crankshaft seal, Item #13……
