The 172523 OMC ignition kit has different condensers and it meant for the larger hp engines like yours….. Just a thought….

That’s Interesting. The condensors in that kit are a different capacitance? Or longer wires? Both? I see that the other kit 172522 is said to be for 3-40HP as well. Maybe that’s a vendor error?

I’m pretty sure the lead length is the same, the capacitance is different though…. And yes, there is some misinformation on some of the sites concerning usage….The 172522 kit is used up to 15hp, the 172523 kit was used on the 18-40hp models…. The different condensers were used to resolve an intermittent miss problem when the 172522 kit condensers were used on the larger engines….

2nd update – on my most recent run, I still wasn’t completely satisfied with the overall running quality so I took the tip from Mumbles and took out the Champion plugs and put in NGK plugs. Runs WAY better at all speeds. Thanks Mumbles!

The #172523 tuneup kit includes #580419 condensers where the #172522 kit includes #580321 condensers. The higher compression engines (begining with the 1969 25hp) took the #580197 ignition coil. NLA now and all motors take the #584477 coil which call for the #580321 condenser. Unless your motor happens to have the original #580197 coils you don’t need the #580419 condensers.
But they just keep making them!
