Can anyone tell me what the E stands for in the model number 4R78E? I never see the E on the front of the OEM Johnson manual. Just puzzles me why. Thank for any info.

Don’t worry about that last letter….  It is used to identify manufacturing changes during the model year.  Could a change as simple as a clamp, screw, bolt, or could be a major change to the powerhead or gearcase.  It is the parts books that will call out big changes by that last letter….

325876   gearcase housing   (used on models with “e” suffix)

334521    gearcase housing   (used on all other suffixes)

Just a fake example of what you might see in an OEM parts book for changes made during the model year….
