      I’m looking at a 1988 Johnson 48 hp VJ48ESLCCC. Just looking for comments/opinions on this motor. Any problem areas?

        They are good motors, in my opinion better than the ‘improved’ ones from 1989-2006. Easier to find parts for. The only draw back is if you want power trim you’re better off buying an aftermarkets unit, for instance from Panther Products.

          Yes, these are simple and reliable engines. The gearcases are a bit “light duty” though, not great for heavy loads, avoid stainless props…

            I ended up buying a 2000 Johnson 50hp. Thanks for your comments. Now I need to work through a few issues with that motor. I’ll start a new thread.
