      Ok so I’ve got the above mentioned engine and the gears are shot. Will the complete gear set from a green JOHNSON MODEL RD fit. The case’s are visibly different. I have installed the Johnson gears in the Evinrude gearcase but things seem tight when rotating the driveshaft.

        They should. Things should rotate freely – test them dry before installing skeg. No driveshaft. Feel for a catch or drag. Add shaft, recheck. Add skeg, recheck. Is skeg original to the housing? That usually works okay, but I’ve had a couple that were mismatched and bound up when installed.

          Thanks for the comments That’s what I’ll try. The Bigtwin cases appear to be a matched set and in good shape. There is no binding it’s just that it seems to turn hard. No one thought of a rolling torque measurement back then i guess. I have another project and thats a 1965 Bigtwin, I’ll take a few mental notes when i install that gear set. Thanks again!!!!! Jim J
