Is there any value in restoring this champion motor?

Absolutely. There are those who have a
strong interest in them.
TubsNovember 23, 2021 at 11:09 am #250111If I can get here running what would be the value?

In the antique outboard hobby “most” motors
don’t have an excepted value. That’s because there
isn’t a lot of people interested in them but the
greatest interest is in these 50′ & 60’s motors.
It just that the number is small and their value
varies from person to person so they are only
willing to pay what its worth to them. Pricing
is more about interest. A low price, say $100.00,
should generate a lot of interest. $800.00 likely
won’t generate any interest at all, taking in
condition and location. I have an interest in
them but I understand the lower unit is
problematic and parts are hard to come by so
I wouldn’t give you very much for it. How much
effort are you will willing to put into reaching
those who would be more interested in it than me?
That’s not a motor that is easy to come by. I’ve
only seen one of them sell so I cant give you an
estimate of what some might pay however getting
it running will likely bring you less money after
you deduct what you spent to get it going.
Someone interested in a motor in your condition
is going to go through it anyway and they (me
anyway) would be more interested in a motor that
hasn’t been messed with.
TubsNovember 23, 2021 at 12:34 pm #250114I would love to have one of those 16s…..and I’d Kill for the dual setup (called tandem33) that’s in Tubs photo. I share the same thoughts about it that Tubs already posted, and prefer to fix one up myself, as that is the most fun part of the hobby for me. I used to be able to get Champion parts from Lyle Swanson, as he got the factory stock when they folded and had a repair shop her in Minnesota about 15 miles from me where I got parts for smaller models. In the late 1980s, Lyle told me he sold all the 16 HP parts and rights to produce the “Hotrod” class B racing version to a guy out east who was still building and selling the racing version. Lyle said he sold that off because he got tired of arguing with Mercury’s lawyers every time one of his Champion “Swanson Hotrods” beat a Mercury in a sanctioned race – which was pretty often! I don’t know if the guy out east is still building motors and/or selling 16 HP parts. Someone on this site should know if he’s still around, and know who he is. Lyle’s shop is long gone now.
FYI: There is a Champion facebook group at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/551675555554500 If that link doesn’t work, go to facebook and type “Champion Outboard Motors” in the search box.

A friend of mine had one that was in the family since new.
He used it as a kid but it had been sitting for decades.
Coils were junk so we did the OMC style coil up date
and cut a new diaphragm for the fuel pump. Had a impeller
made using the center from the old one. The power head
is basically the same as the Hot Rod. Its the stuff below
the power head that is hard to get if you need something.
He ran his regularly for years until he sold his lake property.
These pictures are dated 2004 so its been awhile ago.
This little lever on the fuel line connector operates the choke.
Hard to come by if you need one. Do you have the one for
your motor? Also if this fitting is leaking use some sealer.
Giving it another turn will split the pump. I do have a
Hot Rod but I no longer bend in the places you need to bend
to fit in the type of boat you put them on.
