I have 2 Elto Speedsters:
63449-1928 stuck but freed up. One cyl/piston saved. Crank pretty rough on the journals, etc About what one would expect from a stuck motor. A good (or at least I think/hope) lower unit. Tank has pee holes/rot from massive mouse nest.
80671-1929 Both cyls scored and one bad piston; so good rods and one good piston. Lower unit gears are incomplete. Tank will work but rough.
Hoping to make one out of the 2. I will have many questions but will start with the powerhead.
-Serial not stamped on the early one but is on the later one.-Why the difference on the mounts for the tiller handle mount?
-oiling “patterns” in the upper crank bushings are different. Is one better than the other?
Thanks for insight, help, advice, etc
Scott

You can have all of this if you can use it. I only have the port cylinder. Took a ring off to check the end gap at the bottom and top for taper. Less than I thought there would be. Its a 28 if that matters.

April 9, 2026 at 10:37 pm #314808So after reading chris scratch’s article on the unnumbered speedster, I will ask again the questions I asked above.
-Is there a reason they changed the oiling grooves in the upper crank bushing from ‘28-‘29?
-does it look like the tiller handle bracket mounts on the left crankcase have been altered? It did not have the tiller handle bracket on it when it came to me.April 9, 2026 at 10:43 pm #314810April 9, 2026 at 11:22 pm #314819Ah!! Thank you Tubs!
Is there a trick to removing the tiller handle bracket? The 2 bolts circled in yellow seem happy to stay where they are. Backed off the outside nuts and tapped on them pretty good and nothing. Just a round, flat head on the bolt. Are they designed like a carriage bolt?
Tubs!! I just saw your earlier reply with your generous offer of those parts! Yes! I’m sure I can make use of them. I have pistons but some of the pins in the ring lands are missing. I have 3 decent cylinders. I will check tomorrow to see which side it is.
Thank you!! I will pm you!April 10, 2026 at 5:48 am #314846Try a brass nail ish to relace piston ring keeper pins….

April 10, 2026 at 3:01 pm #314912Question about pistons/rings.
Why was there a ring design change from ‘28 -‘29. Are they interchangeable?
