Can someone give me the proper torque sequence for these motors? Looks like the larger six bolts surrounding the bearings get 13.5 to 14 ft- lbs. Not sure about the smaller outer flange bolts. Should the larger center bolts be step torqued up to full before doing the flange bolts? Thanks for any help

classicomctools@gmail.comJune 24, 2026 at 12:33 pm #322878Yes the 6 larger bolts surround the 3 crankshaft bearings and the spaghetti seal is inside the smaller bolts ending at the upper and lower crankshaft bearings. So one spaghetti seal on each side.

I would be tempted to go in the order of this list of your numbered bolts:
1, 2, 3, 5, 4, 6, 8, 10, 7, 9, 12, 14, 11, 13 or something like that so you are tightening in diagonal opposites as much as possible. Note after 1 and 2 how the numbers are odd, odd, even, even… so you maximize the amount you can tighten in a diagonal sequence. I would think a simillar way like that (odds and evens) based of off your diagram should be equivalent. By doing it this way, you aren’t tightening in a circular pattern like 3,4,5,6. I believe doing it diagonally is supposed to produce less warpage than circling, however I’m not reading this out of a manual for your motor. Good on you for putting so much thought into torquing though!

Yes I would normally think to do it like you have it. I vaguely remember seeing or reading somewhere about circle pattern on this though but, of course, can’t find it now. Regardless this seems a little more stressful than most with 847, spaghetti seals, 14 bolts, 2 different final torques in less than 10 minutes. No wonder I can’t find a video on this. Probably gonna be some cussin.
