Which years of the green Johnsons have the seahorse cast into the leg?
June 20, 2016 at 2:34 pm #38663’53 and ’54…2 of my other favorites. Love the ’53 styling, the cover just makes it a pain to work on though.

I think I got to go green… But the white and red looks sharp too… Maybe one of each !

I too like the green motors. I remember when I was little & seeing them around on the lake…somewhere in Michigan. According to another member there was two shades of green in the early years. I think my gearcase is for a 18hp or less motor. I’m all stocked up with my 58, 18hp, 57 7.5hp & a very nice 57 3hp Johnson. All I need is a 10hp & the 54 15hp I have too, but it is an Evinrude!!!
JeffJune 20, 2016 at 6:16 pm #38672I myself like Frank’s idea. Use a newer crank and rod set retro-fitted in a ’55 – ’57 and you have the toughest 10 ever.
I do believe that the ’58 and later gearcase is pushing the envelope just a bit. That lower unit is barely able to hold up to that much horsepower. Any water intrusion and parts get chewed up bad. The pinion grinds into the bearing badly and that ends up costing you your gears. The older 5 bolt all in all is just so much better. It’s built to take 25 horsepower and that 10 horse powerhead won’t even come close to tearing it up, untill the oil is gone. Plus the 5 bolt was built for more models, for more years, so parts availability is a little better.June 20, 2016 at 6:20 pm #38673quote Jeff Register:Reivertom,

JeffYea, unfortunately you will have to get a ’56 or later, to get the Johnson styling. 😀
I think it would be funny to restore a ’56 with the Seahorse Green paint. It’ll make a good "sleeper" motor.June 20, 2016 at 9:14 pm #38687Scott,
I have a ’54 10hp Johnson as well on the rack. Your wife will hate me though!

June 21, 2016 at 5:02 pm #38712any of them seem to hold up well with a little care, my 58 is and has been my go to fishing motor for a long time. Always starts easy even after it set on the rack for a year or so. I have not had any issues with the lower unit, keep it sealed up and water out, but that goes for any of them.

how is it motors multiply when the garage lights get
turned off? -
